CPL 3rd Week Recap and Score: Royals' Rollercoaster Ride; Patriots Still Struggling-Six6s bet

The third week of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) featured dramatic twists and turns as the Barbados Royals’ fortunes fluctuated, and the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots continued to struggle without a win.

Knight Riders’ Dominance and Heaviest Defeat in CPL History

The Trinbago Knight Riders started the week strongly by successfully chasing down 179 runs against the Patriots. Their star-studded lineup delivered, and they followed this with an astounding 133-run victory over the Barbados Royals, who were bowled out for just 61 while pursuing a target of 195. This defeat marked the heaviest margin of runs in CPL history.

Martin Guptill stole the spotlight with an unbeaten century, scoring 100 runs off 58 balls, despite a slow start with a run-a-ball 20. Guptill had earlier achieved the first century of the CPL season, replicating his remarkable performance in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) earlier this year.

However, the Royals quickly turned the tide as Rovman Powell led them to a comfortable chase of 161 runs against the defending champions, Jamaica Tallawahs. Alex Hales failed to make an impact in his first game of the season, while Alick Athanaze’s mature knock of 76 for the Royals outshone Shamarh Brooks’ 78 for the Tallawahs. Athanaze displayed exceptional batting prowess in a crucial situation, emphasizing his potential.

Powell highlighted the need to manage Athanaze’s talent carefully, urging West Indies cricket authorities to nurture his abilities.

Despite this resurgence, the Royals’ campaign remained unpredictable. They suffered a 90-run defeat against the St Lucia Kings, but their best batting performance came against the Patriots. The Royals successfully chased down a massive target of 221 with eight wickets and 11 deliveries to spare. Rahkeem Cornwall played a stellar role in this remarkable victory, smashing a century with 12 sixes, including a mammoth 111-meter hit that surpassed Kieron Pollard’s 107-meter six earlier in the tournament. Cornwall’s explosive batting entertained the crowd, and he celebrated his century with a memorable bat-drop.

St Lucia Kings’ Success Under Sikandar Raza

Stand-in captain Sikandar Raza maintained the St Lucia Kings’ momentum after regular captain Faf du Plessis’ departure due to a tennis elbow injury. Under Raza’s leadership, the Kings secured a dominant 90-run victory against the Royals, solidifying their position at the top of the CPL table with three wins in their last five games.

Patriots’ Struggles Continue

The St Kitts & Nevis Patriots continued to face difficulties, with no change in fortunes under the leadership of Evin Lewis and later, Sherfane Rutherford. They suffered a crushing defeat against the Amazon Warriors, managing only 88 runs while chasing 187, with Dwaine Pretorius taking three crucial wickets. Despite amassing a substantial total of 220, featuring half-centuries from Rutherford, Will Smeed, and Andre Fletcher, the Patriots faced another significant defeat, this time at the hands of the Royals.

The Patriots’ losing streak extended to six matches after their first two games were washed out due to rain, leaving them with just two points from eight matches. Rutherford, leading against the Royals, expressed frustration with the team’s bowling and fielding lapses but maintained hope for a turnaround.

The third week of CPL 2023 witnessed thrilling matches, remarkable performances, and a rollercoaster journey for the Barbados Royals. The St Lucia Kings continued to impress under Sikandar Raza’s leadership, while the Patriots faced ongoing challenges in their quest for a win.
